A richly composed Victorian still life by G. Evason, dated 1896. The painting depicts an abundant arrangement of summer roses in a clear glass vase, accompanied by grapes, peaches and apples arranged on an elegant footed dish.
Signed G. Evason and dated 1896, the painting is a fine example of late-Victorian academic still life. Although created in the 19th century, the composition looks back to the tradition of 17th-century Dutch still life painting.
The carved architectural backdrop, carefully arranged flowers and abundant fruit recall the visual language of the Dutch Golden Age. Artists of the late 19th century often revived these earlier styles for sophisticated Victorian interiors. Evason’s painting is a particularly appealing example of this Old Master revival.
The flowers and fruit are arranged with great attention to texture and colour. Soft roses contrast with the rich tones of the grapes and peaches, while the glass vase adds a delicate reflective element to the composition.
The painting is presented in a later late-Victorian style gilded gesso frame. Although the frame is later than the painting, its ornate decoration complements the period character of the work.
The painting has an interesting and distinguished provenance.
It was formerly part of the interior art collection of Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, Raymond Blanc’s celebrated two-Michelin-star hotel in Oxfordshire, England. A property label numbered 00308 remains on the reverse.
The work was later deaccessioned and sold through Bonhams, Home & Interiors, 29 June 2011, Sale 18869, Lot 246.
A further label from Michael N. Staniforth, a respected Oxfordshire restorer, confirms previous professional conservation.
