An atmospheric Henri Miloch maritime painting, dated 1954, depicting sailing ships moving through rough seas.
The composition shows a large sailing vessel in the foreground, accompanied by two further ships in the distance. Dark green waves fill the lower part of the painting, while a pale, misty sky creates a soft backdrop.
Miloch uses a muted palette of blue, green, ochre and grey. The loose brushwork captures the movement of the water and the changing light at sea. The result is an evocative scene with a strong sense of atmosphere.
The painting is signed and dated lower right. It is presented in an impressive ornate gilt frame with carved and moulded decoration.
Henri Miloch (1898–1979) was a French painter known for his maritime and coastal scenes.
Born in France, Miloch studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He later became a member of the Société des Artistes Français.
Much of his artistic career was connected with Brittany. He worked extensively around the Breton coast and painted a number of local ports and maritime subjects.
Miloch is particularly associated with the Concarneau region, where he lived and exhibited his work for many years. His paintings capture the character of Breton coastal life, with ships, fishing boats, harbours and open sea featuring prominently in his work.
In 1959, Miloch expanded his activities by opening a studio in Tours, in the Loire Valley.
His maritime paintings remain appealing to collectors for their atmospheric treatment of the sea and their evocative portrayal of the French coast.
