19th-Century European Oil on canvas painting, Mother, Child with Magpie – French school Alsace Region

750,00

A charming original and very fine antique oil painting depicting a peaceful scene of domestic life. A young mother sits outside a rustic cottage preparing leafy vegetables, while a bonneted child rests sleepily against a wooden tub beside her. A Magpie in a wall-mounted cage, an open green shutter and the shaded garden beyond add wonderful narrative detail.

The mother is beautifully dressed in a deep navy-blue gown, white apron and richly patterned terracotta-red shawl. The gentle expressions, warm earthy palette and intimate everyday subject are characteristic of sentimental European genre painting of the 19th century.

The work is painted in oil on canvas in fine detail and remains mounted on its old wooden stretcher. On the reverse is a faded blue oval commercial stencil with partially legible lettering, probably associated with an early art supplier, retailer or dealer in Paris.
