Alexandre Defaux (French, 1826–1900): “Poney à l’étable avec des poules”
A Masterful Barbizon School Farmyard Study
This evocative oil on canvas by the celebrated French landscape and animalier painter Alexandre Defaux offers a glimpse into the quiet, intimate world of 19th-century rural life. The work features a sturdy grey pony standing in the soft, diffused light of a stable, accompanied by a lively group of chickens foraging in the golden straw.
Defaux’s mastery of light and texture is evident in the shaggy coat of the pony and the painterly, tactile quality of the hay. Moving away from the formal “heroic” equestrian portraits of the era, this work embraces the Barbizon School philosophy: finding beauty in the humble, everyday realities of the natural world.
About the Artist: Alexandre Defaux (1826–1900)
Alexandre Defaux was a prominent figure in the 19th-century French art world, best known for his atmospheric landscapes of the Forest of Fontainebleau and his charming farmyard scenes.
The Corot Connection: Defaux was a prized pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, the father of modern French landscape painting. While he inherited Corot’s lyrical sense of light, Defaux developed a more vigorous, textured style that became his hallmark.
Salon Success: He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1859 until his death, consistently receiving critical acclaim and winning multiple medals (1871, 1874, 1875).
Highest Honors: In 1881, he was awarded the Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur), the highest French order of merit for art and culture.
Today, his works are held in prestigious public collections, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and several major regional museums across France and Europe. He is particularly sought after by collectors for his “poultry” scenes, which are considered some of the finest examples of the genre.
The painting is housed in a magnificent, deep-profile 19th-century giltwood frame. The frame is heavily ornamented with: Overlapping laurel and acanthus leaf carvings. Intricate floral corner motifs. A rich, aged gold leaf finish that beautifully contrasts with the earthy, warm tones of the stable interior.
